Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are third molar teeth which usually come out into the mouth between the ages of 17 and 21 years old.

Often there is not enough space for wisdom teeth to come through. They are also very difficult to clean being so far back in your mouth.

Impaction of wisdom teeth is a common problem when there is not enough space for them to come through. In some cases the best treatment is to remove/extract the wisdom teeth completely.

Damage to neighbouring teeth can mean that you lose more than just the wisdom tooth if it is not taken out in time

The X-ray above shows an impacted wisdom tooth which has destroyed the second molar tooth. This could have been avoided if the wisdom tooth was removed earlier.

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?

Not every wisdom tooth requires removal. However a lack of pain does not necessarily mean that they are okay to stay in. Your dentist will advise on your particular situation.

What happens if I do not remove my wisdom teeth?

Possible problems include

-       Pain

-       Infection

-       Formation of Cysts

-       Damage to neighbouring teeth due to infection or resorption of neighbouring teeth

-       Orthodontic issues with movement of neighbouring teeth

There are many options for removal of wisdom teeth which we will discuss with you depending on your circumstances.

Do I need to go to hospital to have my wisdom teeth removed?

In some cases it is best to have wisdom teeth removed in the hospital setting under general anaesthetic so you are completely unconscious.  However, often they can be removed in the dental chair in the same way as other teeth can be extracted in the dental chair. We can advise on the best option for the removal of your wisdom teeth.
